Quiet Mine

I’ve enjoyed the quiet sounds of the neighborhood while sitting out on the patio, getting words (+2k) on the page in between taking care of domestic responsibilities.  Now I’m running out of juice (battery, energy, and wine), so it’s time to pack it up and call it a night and get things in order for the work week ahead because I haven’t won the lottery yet.  In the mean time, here’s another short installment of Justice and Mating Collides.

Howling Wolf on Mountain Peak

After dinner, Samantha sat alone on the couch while she waited for Dustin to finish kitchen clean up.  He had practically pushed her out insisting that she sit, relax, and enjoy the wine this time because next time he would expect her to share in the tasks of preparing and cleaning up after future meals. He spoke with an air of certainty that this was the first of many nights yet to come, and that left her shaken and unsettled.  This time alone was good because she needed to process everything that was happening between them and she was not able to think clearly or process anything while he occupied the same air space. All of her self-constructed defenses were tumbling down at high velocity in an avalanche of sensations and feelings never before experienced, and it made no sense.

They scarcely knew each other; having just met two weeks prior, yet she felt a strong pull and connection with him. The physical reactions were the most troubling. Each time he was near, she was compelled to touch him and be touched.  Shaking her head sharply to stop that train of thought, she reached for her wine and recognized that she had over indulged in three glasses too many and was sobered by the realization that Dustin only joined her in a single glass of wine before dinner, he was probably planning to drive soon and that meant he would be taking her home.  What a depressing thought – she wasn’t ready to go, didn’t want the night to end.

Lost in the rapid thoughts bouncing on the surface, she looked up just in time to see Dustin enter the room and flash her a brilliant smile, sparkling white teeth that were perfectly aligned behind luxurious full lips that begged for her attention and use. He stood there smiling with a dish-towel slung over his shoulder, and all she could think was damn he’s domesticated and sexy as hell, but decided to keep that bit of information to herself and opted to say, “You know I could’ve helped.”

“Nonsense.  I invited you over for dinner, but if you insist next time I’ll let you do all the work.” He said with a wink and a twinkle in his eye.

“It was an amazing meal. You really didn’t have to go through so much trouble. Honest.”

“I’m glad you enjoyed it, and it was no trouble. I was happy to do it. Although, I must confess—“

“Confess! What about?”

“I’ve only mastered about a half-dozen recipes and I made two of my specialties tonight, so I will only be able to impress you with my culinary skills a few more times at most.”

“Oh is that all?  Well since we are confessing, I must tell you that you’re a way better cook than I.  In fact, can’t say I’ve mastered any recipes, but I make really good coffee. Strong coffee. Okay, okay wait. I have one more confession to make…for the first time ever, I think I’m tipsy.”

Dustin laughed at her honesty and reached for her glass and said,  “Well then I think you have had enough of this for now,” but she pulled the glass out of his reach with an outstretched hand hanging over the back of the sofa.

“Very well then keep it, but enjoy more slowly, would ya? Also, when you’re ready, I have a really special indulgence for you. ”

“Oh really, and what might that be?  Wait a minute, are you trying to seduce me with food?”  She asked looking over the rim of her wine glass with a mischievous grin.

Dustin clucked his tongue and shook his head no, “Now Samantha, I don’t have to seduce the willing do I?  But when you’re ready for dessert, I made a flour-less chocolate cake from scratch.  How about we go out on to the patio, enjoy the night’s cool air and talk for a while?”
